CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Urban Prep Academies will stay open under the current leadership after a judge rejected plans for a takeover by Chicago Public Schools.

A Cook County judge ruled charter schools are covered by a state moratorium on CPS closings and the district may not close or consolidate Urban Prep campuses in Englewood and Bronzeville until after the moratorium expires in 2025. The district cited the school’s finances and response to a sexual misconduct investigation in revoking Urban Prep’s charter back in November.

The school’s chief operating officer Troy Boyd called it a victory for Urban Prep and anyone who has supported its model tailored for educating Black boys, according to the Chicago Defender.
