CHAMPAIGN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A major renovation project will soon start at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus.
Governor Pritzker announced the $100 million construction project that includes Illini and Altgeld Halls.
The plan calls for Altgeld Hall to be completely restored, while Illini Hall will be demolished and replaced with a new 140,000 square foot facility. The new Illini Hall will house the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and include a brand new data science center and auditorium. Both buildings will have new lecture halls and classrooms.
The historic Altgeld Hall will undergo extensive repairs to its stone exterior and bell tower, a campus landmark. Interior renovations will include new accessibility features and a total restoration of the hall’s original murals. Altgeld Hall will also have new research space for the Illinois Geometry Lab and the Illinois Risk Lab.
“This project is a credit to partnerships that prioritize financial commitments that make modern facilities and infrastructure a reality,” University of Illinois System President Tim Killeen said. “When completed this project will attract talented people and drive economic development.
The multi-phase project, funded by the state and university dollars, is expected to be completed in 2026.
