CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools officials released a report this week that details spending needed on CPS facilities.

Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez said the city would need $14.4 billion to address building repairs and fully renovate all 522 CPS buildings.

He said the report is a starting point and will be further developed after community engagement, including a survey that will be sent out to CPS stakeholders this fall.

"Input from the survey, along with discussions with our communities will help CPS set priorities as a district, respond to where facility needs are the greatest, and make sense for the necessary funding."

Martinez said the multi-billion dollar investment would save money on emergency repairs in the long run, and as allow for more sustainable schools that reduce utility costs.

"And above all, it would communicate to our students that they are valued. that their education is valued, and that their future is valued," he added.
