(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Several public libraries in Illinois, which can’t afford the cost of needed improvements, are getting financial help from the state.

Henry Haupt, of the Illinois Secretary of State's Office, said $870 thousand in construction grants will be shared by 18 public libraries.

“These grants will help these libraries improve their physical structure, so they can better serve their residents,” Haupt said.

The improvements will be especially valuable to people with disabilities, Haupt said.

“When I say construction grants, it ranges from fixing a  roof, to adding HVAC systems, to replacing flooring, electrical upgrades — things of that nature,” he said.

Chicago-area public libraries receiving grants are in Antioch, North Chicago, Robbins, Shorewood, South Holland and Wilmington.
