VALPARAISO, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Valparaiso University graduate student from India appears to have little chance of survival after he was stabbed last Sunday morning at a Planet Fitness.

29-year-old Varun Raj Pucha was stabbed in the head. He’s in a coma and doctors said his chance of survival is 0 to 5%.

His alleged attacker, 24-year-old Jordan Andrade, of Porter Township, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Andrade told police Pucha was being “a little weird” and threatened to assassinate him so he stabbed the man. It was revealed in court that Andrade is on medication used to treat mental illness.

Charging documents said the wound was so deep it reached his brain stem.

“This incident is horrifying for us all,” Valparaiso University President Jose Padilla told the Gary Post Tribune.

A post on a GoFundMe page set up to assist Pucha’s family said they’re “facing a harrowing journey filled with uncertainty and overwhelming medical bills.”
