(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Lake County sheriff’s K9 that was recently injured in the line of duty has formally retired, officials said Thursday.

The more than decade-old Dax, a police dog that has been credited with a number of apprehensions and drug busts, will be spending his golden years with Deputy John Forlenza, his work partner and handler.

“I am proud to have been his handler and best friend for the last nine years. Dax is a true hero and well deserving of the rest and love that waits for him in his retirement,” Forlenza said in a news release.

Dax was injured March 3 while helping to chase a felony suspect and temporarily lost the use of his hind legs. He is now able to walk on four paws following intensive physical therapy, officials said, but veterinarians advised that he should not return to active duty.

Dax joined the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in 2015 when he was 13 months old. Since then, he has racked up several professional awards and accolades.

“There was virtually nothing K9 Dax couldn’t handle.  He saved many lives throughout his career, apprehended some of the most violent offenders, and located major quantities of illegally trafficked drugs,” Sheriff John D. Idleburg said.
