CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A year after a Palestinian-American boy was killed in a suspected hate crime in his home in Plainfield, people gathered for a memorial Monday.
The Muslim Community Center of Chicago hosted the memorial for Wadee Alfayoumi, a year after the 6-year-old was stabbed to death, allegedly by his landlord.
The executive director of Council On American Islamic Relations (CAIR) Chicago, Ahmed Rehab, said Wadee’s father is grateful for all those who continue to remember his son.
“Through thick and thin, the fact that his son is not forgotten means for him that in the end victory is ours,” Rehab said.
President Biden said he continues to think about Wadee, and he knows days like this are hard because it brings back the hole in the family’s heart. The president encouraged people to take steps to honor the boy’s memory and reaffirm there is no place for hate in America.
CAIR Chicago is working on a memorial display to honor Wadee in Plainfield.
Prosecutors said Joseph Czuba killed the boy and severely wounded his mother in a stabbing because they are Palestinian. The 71-year-old has pleaded not guilty.
