LAKE STATION, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A vigil was held in Lake Station Thursday night for the ten German Shepherds that died last week while being transported from O’Hare Airport to a K9 training facility in Michigan.
The vigil was organized by Jenny Webber, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Hobart, who responded to the gas station where the truck had stopped and what was described as a tragic scene unfolded.
"We really wanted to bring everyone together to grieve, heal, to console each other in what was an unspeakable tragedy," she said. "It was an incredible outpouring of community support."
Her organization works with Lake Station and she was dumbfounded when police prevented the Humane Society from taking and treating the dogs that were suffering from heat stroke.
She said the owner of the dogs, K9 trainer and ex-police officer Mike McHenry, was “belligerent” and insisted the Humane Society not be involved.
He left with most of the dogs and some of them were already dead. McHenry has declined to comment and so has the police chief.
