(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois on Thursday reported its highest coronavirus case numbers since May — a continuing uptick that comes amid the threat of the so-called Delta variant.

The number of new cases has doubled in the span of nine days.

State health officials reported nearly 2,000 new cases of coronavirus infection — the most in a single day since early May — and six additional deaths.

The state’s test “positivity” rate is 3%.

The latest figures from the Illinois Department of Public Health come as Chicago’s health commissioner is warning about the increase in coronavirus cases in the city.

Allison Arwady said the daily average of new cases is at 108, an 86% increase from last week.

“These numbers are still relatively low, but it's not what we want to see,” she tweeted.

Unvaccinated populations are where the infections are occurring, Arwady said.
