CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO)— For the first time since taking office, Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Chicago next week.

COVID-19 vaccine equity is expected to be the focus of the Harris’s trip on Tuesday.

Vaccinating minority communities — which have been most impacted by the pandemic — has been a priority of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, but there have been setbacks.

Notably, there was the apparent misallocation of COVID-19 vaccine doses by The Loretto Hospital, a safety-net medical center on the West Side, to well-connected people who got inoculated before their turn.

Also, the mass-vaccination site at the United Center abruptly changed eligibility requirements because, officials said, not enough city residents were getting appointments.

Harris will travel to Illinois from California on the day of her visit, her office said.
