(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Appointments will now be required at most Illinois driver’s license bureaus, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said.

The goal of his office’s “Skip the Line” program is to eliminate long waits at the office’s 44 busiest facilities. So, service will be by appointment only at almost all Chicago and suburban facilities.

The place to make those appointments is ILSOS.Gov or by calling 844-817-4649. Giannoulias stresses drivers can get most services they need with online transactions without ever having to enter a DMV.

For people who must have walk-in service, Giannoulias said it will be available at the Bilandic Building, 160 N. LaSalle St.

Other changes: No facilities will be closed on Mondays anymore, and 15 of them will operate on Saturdays.

(Editor's note: A previous version of this article erroneously said the changes to walk-in service take effect Saturday. The changes take effect Friday, Sept. 1.)
