Unexpected summer guests can be such a drag: all of the extra grocery shopping, time spent planning entertainment and being on your best household behavior (ie., no watching television in your unmentionables).

But one family had a guest of a different flavor altogether.

Police in Burbank, Calif., were called to a house over the weekend, where they discovered a bear chilling in a swimming pool, looking to beat the triple-digit summer heat.

One officer is heard on the video admitting "I can't blame him." That's because the heat was stifling across California this weekend, hitting triple digits in many areas. A cool down is expected to begin this week in The Golden State.

In Texas, however, the scorcher continues, with temperatures in the north part of the state expected to hit 107 degrees today.

As for the bear, officers noted in a press release that shortly after they arrived, the bear bid the family adieu and “made his way over the wall” and into a tree near the rear of the residence.

Police monitored the situation with the assistance of the Burbank Animal Shelter.

So, if a bear takes the opportunity to take a break in your backyard, wildlife officials say not to approach or run away - instead, face the animal, make noise, and try to appear "as large as possible" -- which is also a nice excuse to eat doughnuts.
