Watchdog sees progress in timely release of police video after shootings

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago's inspector general says the city has gotten much better about the timely release of police-generated video of officer-involved shooting incidents.

The low mark: 2015.  More than a year after the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald by police, the police video of that shooting was finally released.

After that, a new policy was initiated in which video would be released within 60 days of an incident.

Five years later, in 2020, Chicago's inspector general found that deadline wasn't being met.

Now, the current inspector general, Deborah Witzberg, says there has been a marked improvement.

"There's been a lot of progress. There's a really good news story here, which is that the city has gotten much, much better by implementing these recommendations at the timely release of video of policy-covered, use-of-force incidents,” she told WBBM Newsradio.

Witzberg is recommending, though, that the city move toward making the improvements permanent and to make sure city departments are working together.
