WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Waukegan will host not one, but two Mexican Independence Parades Sunday as the city balances limited resources.
The two parades, Desfiles de Independencia and Fiestas Patrias, will take place back to back.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said since it is unusual for two parades to be taking place for one event, the police department is upping its resources.
"Compared to last year's parade, we probably did do double of manpower," he added.
"We have a lot more police officers to cover a lot more streets and different things- also a lot more fire department personnel, city yards, vehicles, resources, barricades."
Chastain said the two parades could be an opportunity for crowds to get two different perspectives of the event.
"Even if they're here to watch the second parade, they come to watch both parades and then that way you get a good show, not with the differences in the two, it could be that much better."
He reminds attendees that there is no designated public parking and urges people to show up early.
