(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The cannabis company 4Front Ventures cut a ribbon Wednesday for the ceremonial opening of a massive cultivation and production facility in the village of Matteson.
Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin cut the ribbon while standing with the company CEO Andrew Thut, among others.
“It’s equipped with state-of-the-art technology, staffed by a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about, not only delivering the very best products, but are big cannabis fans,” Thut said.
Khalid, or Lid Maxie, is a General Manager for the company. He grew up in Matteson.
“Chief of police you can hold your ears but the first time I tried weed was in Matteson.”
The police chief, standing in the back of the room said, “me too.” That got a laugh from the crowd.
The smell of weed was evident walking into the lobby of the 250,000 square foot facility along I-57 near Lincoln Highway. Harvests have already taken place.
State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin said “this is the evolution of economic development in the Southland.”
There are 85 employees and the CEO said there will be a couple dozen hired more in the coming months.
