CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Some West Humboldt Park residents are questioning why they can’t beat the heat by using a Chicago Park District pool.
The pool is in a field house at Orr Park, on Chicago and Pulaski, and the building is currently being occupied by a charter school.
“The swimming pool has not been in operation for approximately 15 years or more. So, what we have is all of this hot weather going on and we don’t have any place for our youth or our community members to come and enjoy,” said community activist Corey Braddock. “Who wants to be inside the house in 100 degree weather?”
Braddock said property owners are paying for the facility. He argued it’s a public building and residents ought to be able to use the long-closed pool. He noted there are investments in other parts of the city. And, without knowing, he figures it would not be a big investment to get this pool opened to area residents again.
“Somebody is choosing not to resource this neighborhood, this community, and we’re suffering from it. There was a shooting two days ago, it was hot. Shootings! Where are they going to go? If they’re outside, they (are) going to get shot, that’s what’s happening,” Braddock said.
WBBM Newsradio has asked the Park District and the Chicago Public Schools for comment.
