(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A fire tore through an apartment building in West Garfield Park on Chicago’s West Side Thursday night and sent three people to the hospital.

Police officers responded to a call about a fire near Ohio Street and Kilpatrick Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday and found fire fighters already there and working to put out the fire in the brick two-story apartment building.

The police department says a 33-year-old man was burned on his face and arms. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile an 81-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman inhaled smoke and were treated by paramedics before being taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Crews were breaking windows to get smoke out of the building and a warming bus was brought in to help those who had to evacuate.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the Red Cross is helping those who are displaced.
