(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A West Side businessman has used his good fortune to help his neighbors in need.

"God had given me a vision to open up a restaurant and to give everything away absolutely free,” Jermaine Jordan explains.

His Free Healthy Hot Meals restaurant on Madison near Karlov provides free hot meals to the hungry seven days a week.

"We also feed the seniors, we feed the homeless encampment every day, and now our numbers are up to almost 1,000 meals per day," he told WBBM Newsradio’s Jim Gudas.

The need is so great, cooking that many meals a day wasn't enough, he said.

"I started giving away groceries as well, free vegetables and fruits," he said.

And as the number of carjackings in Chicago soared, Jordan gave free vehicles to victims who were financially struggling and couldn't afford to replace their vehicles.

Jordan said he was able to pay for all this because of his other businesses, which include a used car dealership and a car wash.

There are many more people to help, but he can't do it alone, he said.

He is asking people to donate to a GoFundMe campaign for his Free Healthy Hot Meals restaurant.
