West suburban church gutted following 3-alarm fire; fire officials investigating

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --- Investigators are trying to determine the cause of an extra-alarm fire that gutted a church in Maywood Monday afternoon.

Neighbors of the New Life in Christ Bible Church at 15th Avenue and Harrison Street saw smoke coming from the rear of the brick building at about 3 p.m.

Firefighters initially made progress, but the fire then spread and ultimately a third alarm was called.

Senior Pastor Ronald Beamon told CBS 2 that his “whole body started shaking” when he arrived.

Flames were shooting out the windows.

“We were so proud to see a brand new roof put on the church, but then to see it today just totally destroyed — but we’re just thanking and praising God that everyone’s OK,” Beamon said.

He said he’s hoping to rebuild.

Maywood had assistance from other, neighboring departments.
