Wheaton Warrenville parents protest outside of school board meeting

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Parents protested outside a Wheaton Warrenville School District 200 school board meeting Wednesday night over what they said was lax treatment of teacher complaints.

Elisabeth Aikins was among those standing outside the meeting with handwritten signs.  She told CBS 2 she wants stronger action taken against a teacher who was reprimanded for texting students last year and showing up at a student’s job.

“That’s considered grooming, and it should be addressed that way by leadership,” Aikins said. “They should be getting these people out of the school.”

The station reported a review found the teacher was told not to send messages to current or former students — after making a student feel uncomfortable.

Parents also wanted to know how a substitute teacher in the district last year was hired to work with children despite a previous conviction that required him to register as a sex offender in Michigan.

The superintendent told the station the case was eventually vacated, which meant it could not be considered an offense barring employment.
