CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The South Side is a bit "greener" after a tree-planting effort today.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson stood just north of Guaranteed Rate Field where 14 new trees were planted in a collaboration with several city departments and the White Sox. It was part of the city’s Our Roots Chicago tree equity initiative.
"We are investing in our communities by planting trees that will turn and provide long term climate and health benefits," Johnson said.
"Through our roots initiative, the city has planted... check this out -over 41,000 trees across Chicago, surpassing our annual goal for the last two consecutive years. Give it up y'all."
The city plans to plant 75,000 trees by 2026 in historically underserved neighborhoods with low canopy cover.
In honor of the collaboration, White Sox Charities donated $5,000 to The Morton Arboretum. Sox Hall of Famer Harold Baines and Sox players Jordan Leasure and Korey Lee were also on hand to toss mulch at the base of the newly planted trees.
