MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A wild turkey has been causing a traffic hazard at a busy intersection in LaPorte County, Indiana, near Michigan City, chasing after cars.

The turkey has been hanging around Trail Creek for months, according to James Milcarek, who lives near Michigan Boulevard and Johnson Road - an area surrounded by woods.

He said the bird has a “particular affinity for the mail truck.”

The behavior mirrors that of Carl the Turkey, before he was hit by a car and killed last month in Kenosha.

"He'd get right in the middle of the road and put all of his feathers up," said one woman.

In the case of the Trail Creek turkey, the Town Marshal, Steve Dick, told WSBT South Bend, people have been stopping in traffic lanes, getting out, and trying to shoo the bird away.

“Human life is certainly more valuable than the life of that turkey," Dick said. “Although we don’t want to minimize that turkey’s life, we certainly don’t want to see somebody get hit.”

The DNR said the territorial turkey is probably reacting when it sees its reflection in the cars.
