CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Wednesday morning marks the start of the boating season when the tall ship Windy makes its way down the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan.
The four-master, 148-foot schooner is one of just five of its kind operating in the United States, according to its owner.
It sails from Navy Pier, taking 40,000 guests each year between May and September.
“Since 1995, Windy has been a source of pride for the City of Chicago and after the trials and tribulations of COVID for the past few years, we believe the 2022 summer season will be phenomenal for Chicago, Navy Pier and Windy," Hope Stawski, President of Amphitrite Digital, Windy’s parent company, said in a statement.
The ship has been sailing Lake Michigan since 1995 and in 2006, it was designated as the city’s Tall Ship Ambassador by then-mayor Richard M. Daley.
