Winnetka homeowner gets into shootout with would-be car thieves: Police

WINNETKA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - No one was hurt early this morning after a North Shore resident confronted would-be car thieves with gunfire.

Winnetka Police said the incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m. in the 400 block of Sheridan Road when a homeowner on the block found three suspects trying to steal a car.

It was at that time, police said, one of the suspects shot at the homeowner, and the homeowner then returned fire. No one was hit.

According to police, two of the suspects left the scene in a vehicle, while the third fled on foot.

Police have issued descriptions of two of the suspects believed to be involved. The first suspect, possibly a male, was described as wearing a black mask, dark hoodie, dark athletic pants and sneakers.

The second suspect, also possibly a male, was seen wearing a black mask, a white hoodie and dark pants.

The third and final suspect was believed to be driving a four-door silver Audi sedan.

There was a heavy police presence all morning on the block as officers investigated the scene.

The Winnetka Memorial Day Parade went on as planned.

Police said they will soon release a description of the suspect.
