A winter storm blowing through the U.S. this week has caused close to 3,000 flight cancelations, according to FlightAware.com.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the site recorded 2,848 canceled flights, including 1,683 total cancellations within, into, or out of the U.S. Another 2,252 cancellations are expected Thursday, including 1,845 within, into, or out of the U.S.

Winter Storm Landon is expected to spread 2,000 miles of heavy snow and ice from Texas to the Midwest and Northeast through Friday, according to The Weather Channel. Accumulations heavy enough to knock out power and cause tree damage, said the outlet.

At O’Hare International Airport in Chicago – one of the nation’s busiest airports and a United Airlines hub – 465 cancellations and 301 delays were reported Wednesday, along with 235 cancellations Thursday.

According to CNN, a powerful winter storm will bring ice, rain, sleet and snow to the Midwest and the South. In the Chicago area, some areas were expected to get up to five inches of snow by Wednesday morning and ice accumulation is predicted in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

There were already 225 cancellations reported at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport, an American Airlines hub, as of Wednesday and 390 expected Thursday. At Dallas Love Field, a Southwest Airlines hub, 56 flights were canceled Wednesday and 313 are expected to be canceled Thursday.

Winter weather and the rapid spread of the omicron variant of COVID-19 late last year and into January has resulted in waves of flight cancellations during recent months. Storms hitting the East Coast in mid-January resulted in more than 4,000 canceled flights, including at least 2,700 entering, departing from, or within the U.S. Throughout the holiday season an estimated 20,000 flights were canceled, said CNN.
