Woman in West Loop escapes from would-be kidnapper with help of Good Samaritans, police say

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago Police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a woman in the city's West Loop but was stopped by some Good Samaritans.

Neighbors who live in the building close to Adams and Sangamon were awakened at around 8:45 a.m. Sunday, by screams of a woman trying to get away from her alleged attempted kidnappers.

Surveillance video shows what appears to be a dark red van driving away. Neighbors said a Lyft driver and passenger got involved and the kidnapper stopped.

Police said the 45-year-old woman was grabbed by both of her arms pulled toward a maroon Dodge Plymouth minivan.

“I am not one to be an alarmist, but, at this point, it does very much upset me. It’s very unnerving, and I’m really urging my neighbors and my friends to walk together, carry some sort of self-defense- pepper spray, mace. The first line of self-dense is being aware,” Julie Darling with the West Loop Community Organization told CBS-2.

Police described the suspect as a Black man in his 30s or 40s and about 5-foot-10. He was wearing a large white sweatshirt with black lettering and gray sweatpants, police said.

In late August, a man was walking his dog at the corner of Adams and Sangamon when he spotted what looked like a woman in distress. The man sprayed the would-be kidnappers with bear spray. They took off in a getaway car.
