CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A house fire on the Far South Side Wednesday morning killed a person trapped inside.

Fire officials said crews responded to the home near 108th and Princeton, in the Roseland neighborhood, at about 6:40 a.m.. There, they discovered smoke and flames coming from the front of the house. Upon entering, firefighters found a woman in her 50s trapped in the front bedroom on the first floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A tenant living on the second floor was able to evacuate thanks to a working smoke detector, Battalion Chief Barry Temple said. The tenant called 9-1-1, and the fire was put out within five minutes of crews arriving on the scene, according to Temple.

CFD’s initial investigation revealed there to be an open flame in the bedroom and that the fire was potentially started by smoking materials.
