Woodstock Willie makes his prediction on when spring will arrive

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It's Groundhog Day and Woodstock Willie has spoke.

“We are here because somehow, some way, we have a good sense of humor and also we believe in magic,” actor Stephen Tobolowsky said Sunday morning.

The “Groundhog Day” actor led the celebration in northwest suburban Woodstock, where thousands of people gathered to find out the fate of winter this year.

“Willie looked skyward to the east, then behind to the ground and stated clearly, in Groundhogese, ‘I definitely do not see a shadow.’”

Woodstock Willie says you won't have to hold onto your hats and gloves for much longer because spring is just around the corner.

Meanwhile, Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania predicted the opposite. He says not to put away those extra layers too soon because six more weeks of winter are on the way.

Tobolowsky spoke about the impact of the film and its power to bring people together.

“This is the proof that magic exists and if you wanna know what the power of art is, like the movie ‘Groundhog Day’, look around you. This is the power of art. So for magic and for art, here we are.”

Along with the Groundhog Day celebration in Woodstock, the city is celebrating the 33rd anniversary of the movie "Groundhog Day" with the scheduled events from the movie.
