CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Malcolm X College is set to break ground on a campus expansion in Austin this week.

Malcolm X College's west campus opens Thursday at the former West Side Learning Center. It's the second of a three-phase expansion plan for the campus, which mostly serves nursing students.

The $17.5 million expansion will house the Community Center for Training and Learning, which will include additional recreational and meeting spaces for students and serve as an events space.

City Colleges of Chicago officials said the project will "allow more people to access a City Colleges of Chicago education so they can reach their academic and career goals."

To celebrate the new space, City Colleges of Chicago will host a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday.
