CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Workers at two climbing gyms on the North Side have voted to unionize.
Movement Climbing and Yoga has two locations in Chicago-in Lincoln Park and in Wrigleyville. According to organizers with Workers United, employees of the Movement gyms have voted by a total of 34- 2 to unionize.
Nearly a third of the employees work at both locations. The union said the workers have complaints over low pay, inadequate benefits, scheduling and favoritism.
“My coworkers are some of the most hardworking, knowledgeable, and competent people I know, and get little recognition for it," a worker named Sadie said in a statement.
"I support a union, because they deserve to have their rights and interests advocated for by the same people who know what goes into the work and see what they do for both the workplace and the wider community day in and day out.”
Kathy Hanshew, President of the Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board of Workers United said: “Winning their Union is always great for workers. However, this win is extra special as it is only the beginning of a movement which empowers workers throughout the climbing gym industry of Chicago."
WBBM has reached out to Movement Climbing for a response.
