ZION (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Investigators have released new information about a house fire last week in far north suburban Zion that killed three members of a family.

Zion Fire Chief Justin Stried said the fire on Oct. 29 at a house in the 2900 block of Enoch Avenue began on a back deck.

He said investigators suspect the fire was sparked by discarded smoking materials.

“We did come to the conclusion that the fire was accidental,” Stried said. “It did start on [an] exterior porch on the southwest portion of the home, and, ultimately it communicated up inside the home and unfortunately three occupants were unable to get out.”

The Lake County Coroner identified the three family members killed in the fire as 58-year-old Scott Copen, 54-year-old Gina Copen and 41-year-old Cristal Copen.

Investigators said no working smoke detectors were found in the house.
