It’d be easy to assume that an artist has a pretty good idea of whether or not they’re a winner at a major award show. For Luke Combs, his big victory came as a surprise and it’s something he’s still blown away by.
Combs took home the prestigious Entertainer of the Year award at the 2021 CMAs and joined Audacy’s Mo & Styckman to share his reaction.

Combs says he’s still “really shocked” that he won the award. “Really thankful obviously and [it’s] a dream realized as well,” he says.
Given the way the night had gone to that point, it was easy to assume that Chris Stapleton was going to be the winner. After all, he was winning award-after-award and even Combs admits he thought Stapleton would take home Entertainer of the Year.
“As the night went on, obviously Chris took home a bunch of trophies. In a lot of ways it was hard to not feel like it was going to him,” he said.
“But it literally could have been anybody. Everyone in that category has a stellar resume and definitely deserves to win that. I’m thankful that we somehow pulled it out,” Combs said before adding with a laugh, “I’m not sure how we did, but I’m not asking questions.”
At the CMAs, Luke treated fans to a performance of a brand new song called “Doin’ This.” The song is deeply personal to Combs as he shared its origin story with Mo & Styckman.
Combs said he and his crew had an appointment to write a song, but didn’t have any ideas they were in love with. This took place during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and as he was talking with his team, Combs got inspired. “One question I always get asked in interviews is, ‘what would be doing if you weren’t doing this?’ It just kind of went from there and the song wrote itself.”
Combs added, “it’s one of my favorite songs I’ve been a part of.”
