LISTEN NOW: Jennifer Nettles talks with Kelly Ford
A self-proclaimed Broadway enthusiast, Nettles has always had an adoration for theatre and has channeled that love into a brand new album, Always Like New, which pays tribute to some of the most iconic Broadway show tunes.
“I Was thrilled that the success that I had through music, I was able to re-enter the theatre community at such a level,” Jennifer told Audacy’s Kelly Ford. “Broadway is the highest level that you can get. It is an iconic, high-level institution.”
The new album isn’t Nettles’ first encounter with Broadway, as she landed the part of Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway in 2015. While she may not be new to the theatre scene, Jennifer says the timing of this project was one-of-a-kind as she finished it moments before Broadway was forced to shut down amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I recorded the last note of this album… on March 12, 2020,” Nettles shared. “I walked out of the vocal booth and everyone’s phones were lighting up saying ‘Broadway is shutting down.’”
While the timing was far from ideal, Nettles knew the sun would come out, "tomorrow," and recently released her show tunes album, Always Like New, which is exciting fans even more for Broadway’s September re-opening.
“[Broadway] is symbolic of the heartbeat of this Country,” Nettles expressed. “And for it to have shut down really underscores the significance of this pandemic.”
She continued, “To then be able to share this project with the world, to be able to do it now when… Broadway is about to re-open. I feel like the drum major out there waving the flag like, ‘we’re coming’ back, people!’”
