Rosie O’Donnell could have been one of the beloved witches in “Hocus Pocus.”

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, O’Donnell said she turned down the role of witch Mary Sanderson in the beloved Hollywood movie. Kathy Najimy ended up playing the part.

“Because I didn’t want to the play fat, mean with who eats and kills kids,” she confirmed. “Even though ti was Bette Midler, who was like, my favorite, and Sarah Jessica Parker.”

"I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t do a part where I would be mean to kids and the joke was about the [character's] size," she continued. "I just felt like I had to say no for that."

O’Donnell went on to praise Najimy’s work in the role.

“Kath’s fantastic in it. You know, she does that face. I don’t even know how she does it,” she said.

O’Donnell also had kind words for Midler’s work and career, calling her “one of the archetypal women that I grew up to and wanted to be around.”

In October of 2022, Disney+ released a sequel to “Hocus Pocus” and has begun work on a third movie in the franchise.
