Asian Grandma Who Fought Off Attacker To Donate $900K GoFundMe To Fight Racism
Close to a million dollars has been raised for the elderly Asian woman who was violently attacked in San Francisco last week. Xiao Zhen Xie, 75, used a board to fight back against the man who walked up and punched her in the eye. She's become an international hero after a video showed her hitting the attacker and yelling at him as he was taken away on a stretcher.
Xie's family started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for her medical bills, but they are now planning to donate the money raised for her to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Her grandson, John Chen, says they'll be giving all the money to combat hate against Asian Americans, at his grandmother's request.
"She said we must not submit to racism and we must fight to the death if necessary," Chen writes in an update to the fundraiser's page. "She also stated multiple times to donate all the funds generated in this GoFundMe back to the Asian American community to combat racism. She insists on making this decision saying this issue is bigger than Her."
