You can always count on a five-year-old to keep you humble.

Thomas Rhett knows this all too well as his daughter, Willa Gray, asked him a hard-hitting question during bedtime one night.

“I remember, I was tucking my oldest in the other night, she’s five years old, about to turn six,” Thomas told Audacy’s Jesse Addy. “I was like, ‘Daddy has to get on the bus tonight, but I’ll be back on Sunday. Make sure you listen to Mommy and do everything you’re supposed to do.’ And she was like, ‘Why are you leaving?’”

Thomas was ready for the question, as he knew his daughters were getting to the age that they would start to notice his regular absence, but what he wasn’t prepared for was her response.

“I was like… just trying to come up with a generic answer of like, ‘this is Daddy’s job,’ and she’s like ‘Don’t you have enough money?’

That’s a big ‘ol slice of humble pie!

Thomas continued, “I was like, ‘You’re five years old! Do you want to get into our 401k right now?’”

The hard-hitting question stuck with Rhett, prompting him to seek advice from a mentor.

“I was talking to a good mentor, friend of mind and they were like, ‘You shouldn’t word it that way, you should word it like - Daddy leaves because Daddy gets to go put smiles on people’s faces three nights in a row.”

“When I started to explain it that way, it made whole bunch of sense in her head, and honestly is the real reason.”
