So what makes a truck like this special?
Muscles.
As you've probably noticed, 1500 Series Crew Cab pickups are starting to become the "family car".
And why not? Stretch-out room for five + the ability to tote a good-sized load.
So where does that leave the 2500 series or "HD" vehicles today?
That's kinda' like askin' where do 800 lb gorillas sleep?
Anywhere they want to be.
You'll see trucks like this on job sites across America…as well as in the driveways of those under-the-radar people referred to as "The Millionaires Next Door".
So how, again, does GMC's HD Sierra doffer from their "regular" 1500 series trucks? The answer, again, is muscles. Muscles and size. And in AT4 trim, add "capabilities", too.
Let's start with size. Most 4-door crew cab pickups have 5 1/2 foot beds. The Sierra has a 6' 9" bed back there…with the option to get an 8 foot box if needed.
And as for power? No Turbo 4's or V-6's here. Heavy metal only. Choose from a pair of 6.6 liter V-8's…either gas with a 6-speed auto or a turbo-diesel with a 10-speed auto.
We had the diesel, and if you plan to do some serious towing, that's probably the choice for you. It'll tow up to 18,500 lbs with a max payload of 3,600 lbs. Need more? Go with GMC's 3500 series and tow a small house.
Then in AT4 Off-Road trim, we can really get into capability. 4-Wheel Drive with a 2-speed transfer case, a locking rear differential, skid plates, hill descent control, selectable traction settings for various conditions and off-road Rancho monotube shocks are all part of a roughly 5K package…and they transform your Sierra HD AT4 from just a "give me a tough job to do" truck to all that plus a "and don't think that dirt, mud, sand, rocks or snow are going to stop me from getting there" truck.
Luxury? That's pretty much a given with a high-line GMC vehicle, right? Hit the right option boxes and enjoy just about everything that GM has to offer, like heated and ventilated leather, Bose audio, surround-vision with up to 15 camera angles, power retractable entry steps with LED lighting, 20" black gloss alloys…and that's just the appetizer part of the menu.
You can even opt for the industry's first carbon-fiber pickup bed.
Pricing for something with this much capability will usually land in the upper $70's…and, again, if you hit the right option boxes, you probably won't find yourself thinking "Dang…I wish I had…." Why not? 'Cause you'll probably already have it.
If you're looking for a "moving experience"…whether it's moving some serious tonnage or just moving your emotions, GMC's Big-Boy Sierra HD AT4 just might have what it takes to move you.
