On Friday, Grammy nominated singer, Ruben Studdard and song writer Alan Scott joined Ramona DeBreaux to discuss their new song, “John Lewis Lives”, a tribute to the late Civil Rights Leader. Scott told Ramona that the idea for the song came from the inspirations the late Congressman had on his life, “I was inspired by John Lewis my entire life,” Scott said as he reflected on his time as a young boy watching the march on Washington pass by his home and seeing John Lewis in the March.

Studdard, who is from Lewis’ home state of Alabama, says growing up and learning about the Civil Rights icon throughout his childhood days has had a positive impact on his life so being a part of the project was not a hard decision for him. Studdard also mentioned that following the season in which he won “American Idol”, he had several opportunities of meeting Lewis and that Lewis had even invited him to his commemorative March In Selma on multiple occasions. “For me, it was just that there were so many people from my home state that fought so hard to give me the rights that I have,” Studdard told Ramona, adding “it was just an opportunity for me to pay tribute to somebody that’s done so much for me.”
