Today all of us at the People’s Station V-103 pause to remember Atlanta newscasting icon Jovita Moore. Today is Moore’s birthday and she would have been 57 years old.
Moore was originally from New York City, but she became a beloved new anchor here at WSB-TV in the ATL where delivered award winning news stories from 1998 until her death.
In 2001, Moore won an Emmy for her news piece on cystic fibroids, which also included her own battle with the disease and surgery, and after that, she went on to win eight more Emmys.
In July 2012 when Monica Kaufman Pearson retired, Moore was chosen as her replacement anchor and could be seen anchoring the 5:00, 6:00 and 11:00 evening newscasts, alongside Justin Farmer.
Outside of newscasting, Jovita was very active in the community. She helped out several civic associations and non-profit organizations throughout metro Atlanta and sat on numerous boards of directors, including the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists.
In April 2021, doctors diagnosed Moore with two brain tumors. She had a successful surgery to remove the tumors, but was later diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer that took her life on October 28, 2021.
In remembrance of Jovita’s life and legacy, Cox Media Group and the National Association of Black Journalists have a scholarship fund in Jovita’s memory. The $25,000 annual investment supports students studying broadcast journalism. If you’d like to help keep Jovita’s legacy alive, you can by donating NABJ.org.
