Hawks earn No. 1 pick in surprising NBA Draft lottery results

Never tell the Atlanta Hawks the odds.

With just a 3 percent chance of winning the NBA Draft Lottery, the league announced on Sunday that the Hawks earned the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft, which will take place June 26-27.

It is the first time the Hawks have the No. 1 pick since 1975, when they selected David Thompson.

Of the 14 lottery teams, the Hawks – who finished 10th in the Eastern Conference this season – had the fifth-worst odds while the Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards each had a 14 percent chance of landing the first pick.

The Pistons, who won just 14 games this season, landed the fifth pick while Washington will pick second.

While the No. 1 pick is coveted regardless of the draft class, this year does not have a consensus No. 1 pick.

Some mock drafts project French prospects Alex Sarr – a 7-foot-1 18-year-old — and Zaccharie Risacher – a 6-foot-9 wing who can shoot the three – as potential top picks, while UConn center Donovan Clingan and Kentucky point guard Rob Dillingham could also be in consideration.
