JOLIET (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Fire damaged a late-nineteenth century mansion in Joliet Wednesday afternoon. Now, there are a lot of worried brides unsure if they’ll be able to have their weddings there.
Fire crews found smoke pouring from the roof of the three-story Haley Mansion, prompting them to cut through to get to the fire that was believed to have originated in the attic.
Firefighters also cut through the ceiling to get to the flames. They had it under control in about 40 minutes. But, there’s significant damage.
The 8,600 square foot limestone castle-like building was completed in 1893. It now serves as a wedding and event space.
Kim Zaruba was married there. She spoke to CBS-2.
“I just love old spaces. I do, I just love the character and the history of what they have to offer and stories to tell,” Zaruba said.
It’s unclear now when the Haley Mansion will host events again.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
It was built in 1891 by New York-born attorney Patrick Columbus Haley, who moved to Will County as a child and went on to become the mayor of Joliet.
