CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- At least three people with ties to the Chicago area are reported to be among those missing following the collapse of a condo building Thursday in the Miami, Florida area.
University of Chicago student Ilan Naibryf had really grown to love Chicago, but according to the Sun-Times, he went down to Surfside, Florida to live with his parents during the pandemic. Naibryf, his girlfriend, and his parents have all been reported missing.
Recent Loyola University graduate Juan Mora is missing too. According to the Miami Herald, he had gone to the Champlain Towers to visit his parents who live in the building. All three - Juan Mora, Juan Mora Sr., and Ana Mora - have been reported missing.
Additionally, 77-year-old former River Grove resident Richard Augustine is missing. His daughter told ABC 7 Chicago her dad was supposed to fly to Chicago on Thursday for a visit.
"He was actually supposed to fly in today," Debbie Hill told ABC 7 Chicago. "He just finished up a trip with my brother out in California and he went home to repack his bags and he was coming to spend the weekend here."
Hill said her father's condo was in a corner where the Champlain Towers building pancaked on itself.
"He was right in the corner where the buildings met, so yeah, that was pretty scary to watch. And of course, immediately I tried to call him and his phone went straight to voicemail," she said.
