Ald. Lopez orders 'dibs' clean-up by Streets and Sanitation crews amid complaints

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Just in time for a predicted big snowstorm, a South Side alderman has declared war on “dibs”.

Alderman Ray Lopez (15th Ward) said he’s been getting complaints about people claiming “dibs” on street parking spaces they’ve cleared of snow, so on Monday, he ordered a clean-up by Streets and Sanitation crews.

According to CBS 2, as of late Monday, nine truckloads of "dibs" items had been picked up from the street and hauled away - and that was only the beginning.

“We’ve seen everything from toilets to mattresses to vacuum cleaners,” Ald. Lopez told CBS 2.

Ald. Lopez tweeted that the crews were starting Monday on the blocks with the highest "dibs" complaints, and would push forward with the entire ward throughout the week.

"Now is your chance to take back your lawn furniture, baby strollers & buckets before I consign them to their final resting place!" Ald. Lopez tweeted.

He told CBS 2 his office had had 40 dibs complaints since Monday.

“We want to make sure that we address these complaints so that people don’t think that their calls are not going unanswered,” Ald. Lopez said.

Replies to Ald. Lopez on Twitter included one that said, "the people that didn’t do anything to clear those spots but will park in them appreciate this."

Another wrote, "Thank you. Dibs is low-class behavior and should be treated as such."

And another tweeted, "...everyone just wants to swoop a spot cleared by someone else - the real American Dream."
