UChicago Medicine doctor questions CDC’s latest COVID-19 quarantine recommendation time

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A local infectious disease expert is questioning the latest recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how long people should quarantine if they contract COVID-19.

Dr. Emily Landon, executive medical director of Infection Prevention and Control at the University of Chicago Medicine, told CBS 2 Chicago that she would have recommended that people with COVID-19 stay in quarantine at least seven days not five as the CDC now recommends.

“There’s probably a lot of pressure on the CDC to bring people back everywhere because a lot of other industries are experiencing exactly the same staffing shortages because people are really likely to have COVID,” Landon said.

Landon also said that if you have a runny nose or sore throat these days, you’re more than likely to have COVID-19 than the common cold.

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Tuesday reported nearly 21,000 cases of COVID-19 and 96 deaths, the highest number of deaths in one day since last February.
