FOP president tests positive for COVID-19 as union and city to resume arbitration talks

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Arbitration is set to resume Monday between the Chicago police union and the city over its COVID-19 vaccine mandate but one vocal critic is not expected to be at the table.

Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara said he has COVID-19.

“After testing negative in the morning, I tested positive like 20 hours later,” he said in a YouTube video.

He said he started not feeling well on Thursday and despite being vaccinated against COVID-19, came up positive Friday.

In a weekly update shared to Youtube, Catanzara said the union expects the mediator to hear from medical experts including Chicago Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Awardy.

“I told you we were leaving no bullets in the gun so to the speak and we’re challenging every component of this ridiculous process,” he said.

Arbitration started last week after a Cook County judge sent the matter there and suspended the city’s Dec. 31 vaccination deadline.

Catanzara said he predicts it should finish by Tuesday at the latest.
