Chicago-based MedGlobal loses contact with staff at Gaza hospital

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It's been about two days since a Chicago Ridge humanitarian group called MedGlobal has been able to contact staff working at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza.

Medical personnel with MedGlobal have been working out of 11 hospitals in Northern Gaza.

Dr. Thaer Ahmad, a MedGlobal board member, told CBS 2 that they have lost all contact with their staff at Al-Shifa Hospital.

“We’ve heard that the electricity is out and that patients in the hospital are not getting the treatment that they need,” Ahmad said.

He says other humanitarian organizations are experiencing a similar issue.

President of Doctors Without Borders, Dr. Christos Christou, said a ceasefire is essential to protect patients in these hospitals.

“We need to understand that we have to protect the hospitals," Christou said. "Any attack on medical care at the moment is an attack on humanity.

MedGlobal said it may be a while before people can safely evacuate the hospital, due to what they said are heavy sniper attacks targeting anyone who tries to leave the hospital.
