Dancers Begin Auditioning For A&A Ballet’s ‘The Art Deco Nutcracker’ Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The show is tentatively set to debut at the Studebaker Theater in December.

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Maybe you're not ready to talk about the holidays yet - but some dancers are.

Decked out in their dance wear and ballet shoes, dancers as young as 4-years old have been auditioning for the A&A Ballet production of "The Art Deco Nutcracker", tentatively set to debut at the Studebaker Theater downtown in December.

The dancers are vying for the classic roles of Clara, the Prince of the Dolls, the mice, and more.

A&A Ballet founding artistic director Alexi Kremnev said dancing during a pandemic is taking a real leap of faith, but the kids love it.

“It gives excitement for our students, because after five months, or after six months of sitting, sleeping, staying home you have to start moving, and again, in a safe way, in a very safe way,” he told CBS 2.

Live performances are scheduled for December 5th and 6th. If they won't be allowed, the show will be taped and broadcast.

Those auditioning performed in rotating groups of 10, observing COVID-19 safety guidelines.
