CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Bob Tataryn and his wife, Katheryn, were walking home from the Irving Park Road Blue Line station last week when they noticed someone was following them.
When the 72-year-old couple reached the corner of Avondale Avenue and Irving Park Road, the man attacked.
“He hit her – left, right, left, right,” Bob Tataryn told CBS 2 Chicago. “Then he clocked me – the same procedure – I would say six, seven, eight times to the head, and I went down.”
When Bob Tataryn realized the attacker wasn’t going to stop, he came up with a sob story.
“I yelled out, ‘My wife – she’s really sick, she’s got cancer!’” Tataryn said. “He turned and walked away.”
Katheryn Tataryn doesn’t really have cancer, but she did suffer a broken jaw and wrists requiring multiple surgeries.
Still, Bob Tataryn said they aren’t going to be scared to keep living.
“Don’t let them win,” he said. “Don’t let the bad guy win.”
Chicago police have not made an arrest in their case.
