CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A big fire Tuesday night in the West Town neighborhood rekindled this morning.
Strong winds put firefighters at a disadvantage when pallets caught fire in a 200-by-300-foot warehouse near Hubbard and Damen.
Chicago Fire Department First District Chief Jim McDonough said it was ultimately a 4-11, drawing nearly 300 firefighters and implementing about 80 pieces of equipment.
“That fire created its own wind,” said McDonough. “It was windy enough, but, once that thing started rolling that created its own wind. We were very fortunate.”
McDonough said last night, it was expected firefighters would be there through the night because fire was hidden under the collapsed roof.
“We’re talking about 20,000 pallets inside a structure…We’re going to be throwing a lot of water trying to get those hidden fires that the roof collapsed on,” McDonough said.
He noted firefighters did a great job protecting neighboring buildings.
