Fight breaks out at meeting of Thornton Township Board of Trustees

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A brawl broke out Tuesday night during a meeting of the Thornton Township Board of Trustees.

It happened during public comments.

Activist Jedidiah Brown, no fan of the Township Supervisor, Tiffany Henyard, addressed her with insulting language.

“You gone, b****,” he said.

Then the place erupted and a fight ensued at the front of the room.

CBS News Chicago reports Henyard’s boyfriend, Kamal Woods, was in the fray.

Henyard reportedly ran towards the fight and was ultimately knocked to the floor and lost a shoe.

Earlier, trustee Stephanie Wiedeman, made a motion to put Woods and another Township employee on administrative leave. Woods runs the Township youth program.

Henyard wasn’t pleased with the motion.

“No, and this is political retaliation,” Henyard said.

After the brawl, the meeting ended and police got everyone out of the building.

Before Henyard was appointed Township Supervisor, these meetings rarely made news.

Recently, there has been a long string of members boycotting meetings. Earlier this month, Henard failed to show up to meetings of the boards of trustees in Dolton, where she is mayor, and Thornton Township due to threats.

Henyard is also filing a lawsuit after she was voted off the primary ballot in Thornton Township.

Earlier this week, former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot released the findings of an investigation into the finances of the Village of Dolton under Mayor Tiffany Henyard.

Lightfoot noted excessive spending – much of which can’t be tracked. This included statements from credit cards, but no explanation for purchases from Best Buy, Wayfair and Amazon.

This included $775,000 in 2023, $200,000 on Amazon, more than $100,000 on travel, including “economic development” trips to Las Vegas.

Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor, was hired by Village Trustees to shed light on the spending. Her investigation was actually hindered by a village Freedom of Information officer who was ultimately fired by village trustees, who seized power from Henyard last year.

Lightfoot’s report found nearly $5 million in unpaid bills. The village’s budget is roughly $13 million a year.

Current spending is down around $500,000 a month from when Henyard was in charge.

David Greising, President and CEO of Better Government Association, said he is astounded that her supporters continue to back her.

“Well it’s astounding… that the mayor’s defenders, Mayor Tiffany Henyard’s defenders,  continue to rally around her despite evidence that continues to build about the self-serving ways in which she operated the town.”
